Technology pioneers from Samsung launched this internship project with the goal of outsourcing a creative vision to a team of talented designers curated by SCAD. They know autonomous cars are the future of transportation, and they needed help in exploring their potential to contribute in this rapidly growing industry.

Mission

The challenge? To design the interior for the vehicle of the future—envisioning a rich experience between users and the Samsung brand by building a functional, life-size prototype of an autonomous car dashboard in ten week's time.

As lead producer, I was elected to oversee and contribute in every aspect of the project including UX research and design. My focus, however, was on polishing visual elements of our design and strategize our way into building the prototype.

Story

With more than 40 companies investing in autonomous vehicle technology, the reality is driverless cars are coming, and sooner than we realize.

And while the exterior of the car is undeniably important, companies often overlook something that often makes or breaks a fantastic car experience: the dashboard.

Design Process

Through the double diamond design methodology I planned out the entire project, starting with the clear understanding of the brief and working our way into the delivery of sound design solutions.

Research

Five different levels of autonomous driving

Samsung wanted us to focus on level 3 autonomy, where driver-less cars able to fully operate themselves under the right conditions.

Our research accrued into...

We also visited 16 car dealerships to study current car manufacturers and draw inspiration

Here's a video that shows how it all went down!

Findings

Emerging patterns led us to discover valuable insights on user needs and behaviors

This later became the design criteria that shaped our deliverables.

From here, we developed personas based on real users:

Design Solutions

Atmosphere

Users wish to have the perfect atmosphere that fits their every mood. Immersion was key in creating the ideal dashboard.

Adaptability

We uncovered people's need for versatility. Users wish to have the perfect machine that fits all their everyday needs.

Companionship

Research showed people want feel in control of their vehicle at all times. This is a challenge in Autonomous Mode and requires full transparency.

Connectivity

We discovered users prioritize seamless connectivity between devices. People lead busy lives and their technology must keep up across platforms to create an optimal user experience.

Here's a video that introduces some of these features:

Outcome

We shipped our prototype and a few months after the project, Samsung announced its investment of $300 million into autonomous vehicles. They also revealed a dashboard design focused that continued the project.
